OUR RESPONSE

Lebanon.png

On Tuesday August 4th, a massive explosion devastated the city of Beirut, killing more than 100, injuring over 5,000, and leaving some 300,000 people homeless. The blast destroyed homes and infrastructure over an area of roughly 6 miles. Prior to the explosion, 50% of Lebanese people were living below the poverty line, having experienced a recent 80% drop in their currency’s value. Over 1.5 million refugees live in Lebanon, the highest, per capita, of anywhere the world. Most are Syrian, having fled the nearly decade-old war that has devastated their nation. More than three quarters are are women and children. Some in the international community are saying Lebanon may never recover.

We begged to differ. Alongside with our long-term, on-the-ground-partner, Together for The Family, we helped churches and communities respond to thousands of people left homeless, hopeless, and hungry. Hundreds of families received food boxes along with an emotional health check-in visit for each family. You showed up to help them by providing cash disbursements to “ground zero” families in Beirut. These disbursements provided urgent relief and funds to repair and secure their homes before the winter rains arrived in December. Together we also helped families with support from structural engineers.

For us, this wasn’t just a moment to respond. We wanted all of our friends and advocates to show up. Together, we wanted to  show our sisters in Lebanon and Syria the commitment 1MT had made years before this crisis was true in catastrophe as well as crisis. We showed up because you showed up.

But the crisis continues, especially among refugee communities in Lebanon. Consider showing up again throughout 2021 with a monthly gift.
